June 30, 1906 - June 30, 2005

It's been 99 years since President Theodore Roosevelt signed into law two important acts. The Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act - both were signed into law on June 30, 1906. Many historians recall these two acts as the beginning of the consumer movement in the United States.
Teddy himself wrote about the spoiled 'canned fresh beef' supplied to the Rough Riders in 1898 during the Spanish-American War in his book, The Rough Riders. His personal experience with tainted meat certainly influenced the fervor with which he set about to get these two bills approved by Congress and signed into law.
Teddy was a man of action. He lived his live "In the Arena." How are you living your life? Are you in the arena, or are you a spectator?
